Today @zackwhittaker brings up a very important topic about the launch of the new Apple Watch this week:
How a large company like Apple can play an important role in normalizing intrusive surveillance.
"Apple is opening the door to a world where other companies, device makers, and app developers try to recreate or rival Apple's technology and do a far shoddier job, all the while creating a worse surveillance monster and introducing new security and privacy risks along the way."
We don't talk enough about how privacy is also a culture, part of cultural norms that can go in one direction or another.
Products like this, produced and sold at a massive scale, weakens our culture of consent and privacy, and pushes society towards the increasing normalization of always-on surveillance.

Like, I will need to call external commands like fsck, and fork & wait & whatnot in C is a bit of a lets not do that.
Now, the problem with this (rewriting the initd in Rust) is that I'm using some NetBSD-specific APIs, and I either need to write unsafe libc wrappers for them, or use an external program.
Since I will already need an external program (fsck), I might aswell use the various mount commands too.
The ramdisk will also be a little bit larger, most likely, but not too much, I think.

The hype cycle and inflated claims about AI this autumn are getting so bizarre that I feel it's only a matter of time before they out-gonzo the opening of the 1992 SF novel "Steel Beach" by John Varley:

To make a plea for slowing development, while being ideally placed to do exactly that, is to produce in us the notion that development cannot be stopped, that technological development is out of control. This is part of the 'Inevitablism' delusion big tech actively propagates.
Like arsonists petitioning for stronger protections against the 'phenomena' of arsony.
It is a patronising ploy, social engineering.
They mock us.

One thing that really annoys me about the way the media explains the rise of populist right around the world is the idea that they're somehow more authentic... That politicians and people in general have a "real self" hidden inside that may reveal to the public. Pauline Hanson and Trump might be more willing to say what they think and express controversial opinions than centrists, but that doesn't make them more "real". In the end like all humans are just organisms reacting to their environment. There's no beautiful soul hidden away inside, waiting to shine through.
